Then...
Law School Smoker (1957)...
And Now...
"Repay Tuition into the Charles G. Howard Endowed Scholarship"
Charlie G. Howard taught law at the University of Oregon from 1928 through 1971. In 1958-1959, the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity established the University of Oregon School of Law's first ever scholarship in the name of this beloved and witty professor. Since late classmate Roy Mosman received the first award, thousands of dollars have been awarded to well over 100 students. Currently, four students each year receive $2,000 in scholarship money.
The Steering Committee of the Class of 1959 felt that as a tribute to our 50-year reunion, we should provide financial support to the law school. Contributing to the endowed Charlie Howard Scholarship seems like the logical choice.
Back
in the late 1950s, the taxpayers of the state of Oregon primarily
funded our professional education. Between the fall of 1956 and the
spring of 1959, when we graduated, we paid an average of only $210 a
year in tuition and fees. Upon graduation, jobs were more
plentiful than today and our JD degrees from the University of Oregon
School of Law opened doors to opportunities that have been highly
rewarding for the great majority of us - personally, professional, and
financially.
Today,
taxpayer support for our public institution has all but evaporated, so
that law school tuition at the U of O is $22,328 for in-state students
and $27,818 for out-of-state students. And while student loans have
become major-league burdens, jobs have become significantly less
plentiful.
Which
leads to our proposal: If each of the living members of our class
"repaid" a portion of our subsidy by pledging our total tuition amount
of $630 over a three-year period, we would add $16,000 to the Charlie Howard Scholarship.
If
you would like to join us in this effort, there are two ways to do so.
We suggest two yearly contributions of $315 each. But you can make a
contribution in one lump sum, monthly, quarterly or yearly. Click the
appropriate button below. And thanks for helping with this project!
Click above for the on-line form. On the form, please indicate the total amount you wish to contribute
under the "Designation 1" field. For multiple payments, select the
appropriate radio button under the "Gift Payment" section.
