The Lois & Ray Ackerman General Scholarship FundBack in the early 1960s, the taxpayers of the state of Oregon primarily funded our professional education. Between the fall of 1961 and the spring of 1964, when we graduated, we paid an average of only $300 a year in tuition. Upon graduation, jobs were more plentiful than today and our JD degrees from the University of Oregon School of Law opened doors to opportunities that have been highly rewarding for the great majority of us - personally, professional, and financially.
Today, taxpayer support for our public institution has all but evaporated, so that law school tuition at the U of O is $22,328 for in-state students and $27,818 for out-of-state students. And while student loans have become major-league burdens, jobs have become significantly less plentiful.
Which leads to our proposal: If each of the living members of our class "repaid" a portion of our subsidy by pledging our total tuition amount of $900 over a two year period, we would add $18,000 to the newly endowed Lois and Ray Ackerman General Scholarship Fund.
Affectionately referred to as "Mrs. A," Lois Ackerman served as our Assistant Dean, Registrar, Admissions Officer, Recorder, Executive Assistant and in many instances, a student counselor. Mrs. A passed away earlier this year and we felt this was a great way to honor her memory.
If you would like to join us in this effort, there are two ways to do so. We suggest two yearly contributions of $450 each. But you can make a contribution in one lump sum, monthly, quarterly or yearly. Click the appropriate button below:
