Creation of an Endowed "Class of 1974 Scholarship"
Goal: 100% Participation and $250,000
Back in the early 1970s, the people of the state of Oregon primarily funded our professional education. Between the fall of 1971 and the spring of 1974, when we graduated, we paid an average of only $1,018 (in today's inflated dollars) per year in tuition. When we graduated, jobs were plentiful and our subsidized Oregon Law JD degree opened doors to opportunities that have been highly rewarding for the great majority of us - personally, professional, and financially.
Today, taxpayer support for our public institution has all but evaporated, so that law school tuition at the U of O is $22,328 for in-state students and $27,818 for out-of-state students. And while student loans have become major-league burdens, jobs have become significantly less plentiful.
Which leads to our proposal: If each of us "repaid" a portion of our subsidy by pledging that 1970s tuition amount of $1,018 a year for three years to a new endowed scholarship fund in the name of the Class of 1974 - and then used that fund to challenge other reunion classes to do the same - we would set the bar for giving back to the institution which contributed so much to the professional rewards we have enjoyed.
Eighteen members of the UO Law Class of 1974 are sufficiently committed to this goal that we've each made our $3,054 pledges to the Class of 1974 Scholarship Fund, payable over the ensuing three years. If all living members of our class followed suit, we could raise over $350,000 for this project. But bear in mind that any contribution furthers our goal of 100% participation.
