Classmates
The Class of 2005 ScholarshipIn 2005, the total cost of a three-year legal education at the University of Oregon was $44,604 for in-state residents. In May 2010, in-state Oregon Law students will graduate with $62,494 of debt. Out-of-state students will have graduated with $77,824 of educational debt. This figure doesn't include the cost of living, books, bar exam study materials or other expenses. While we understand that most of us will be in debt for years, we will be attempting to do something that no class has ever done - pledge to endow a $25,000 reunion scholarship at our FIRST reunion. We will have five years to fulfill this pledge. The idea is to provide the scholarship to a student in good academic standing with significant debt and strong involvement in public interest work. In other words, a student who is in significant debt and is likely to remain so due to career aspirations. The scholarship will go to a 3L student (so the law school can best assess the student's debt) who can prove strong financial need. There is a clause in the scholarship that we have a strong preference for a student in the Public Interest Public Service Program (OLSPIF, Street Law, pro bono program, etc.). How in the world will we accomplish this? Thanks to some generous classmates, we have a head start. Tom and Kate Peters have graciously offered to make a $2,000/yr. contribution over a five-year period. And Jeff Potter and his wife have agreed to chip in $1,000 per year over five years. They are challenging the rest of the Class of 2005 to match their collective $3,000/yr commitment over five years. We will list anyone who makes a $100/yr. commitment on this page. This is a precedent-setting opportunity. Let's make the most of it! You can also donate through the reunion registration page. |
